Stirling MP Alyn Smith and MSP Bruce Crawford have celebrated World Refugee Day, as the coronavirus pandemic offers a new perspective on the value of stability and security.
This year would have marked the 20th anniversary of the Refugee Festival Scotland, organised and coordinated by the Scottish Refugee Council.
Stirling has a proud history of welcoming those in need. In 2018, through the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme, Stirling welcomed five families escaping war and destruction, helping them to build a new life in Scotland.
Alyn Smith MP said:
‘The theme of World Refugee Day 2020 is ‘Every Action Counts’, a phrase that couldn’t be more apt in this period of international crisis. We’ve seen devastating conflicts and disasters unfold over the last few years, and families fleeing death and destruction deserve sanctuary and safety. I’m extremely proud of Stirling’s track record in providing a warm welcome.’
Bruce Crawford said:
‘Stirling is home to a vibrant third-sector, which has found a real strength in providing support to refugees seeking to make a fresh start here in Scotland. World Refugee Day should give us cause to pause and reflect on our own experiences. We must strive to do what we can to help others live in peace and dignity.’
